Fistulas... ati whats that? i didn't know either until i saw this mama (Dr Hamlin) briefly on Oprah one time. basically complications from obstructive childbirth and so without medical care ...some gals have labour and push for even 5days Animated Cyclops ouch. Yaani halafu the incontinence and stink you get shunned by the community... what a life.

The cases of those girls make you count your blessings ... coz unlike Ethiopia and some other muslim countries even though women in Kenya get a raw deal, girls are not married so young increasing the probability of young pregnancies and such consequences. To think theyve treated 24000 gals?

a fistula is any type of necrotic hole from one thing to another on the body. Like a bladder to anal fistula, or vaginal to anal. Each more disgusting than the last.
It can b a big-ass thing that grows from, the ass.....my male work mate died from it. Crying or Very sad

Is that So? no wonder those big buggy pants Indians wear in kenya are called festulas. They have a big as*s hole in the middle going from back to front. My goodness.

Funny thing about the indian pants, Chemosi! But on a serious note, fistulas are pathological communications between two epithelial surfaces in the body. Of most importance in our setting(kenya) are obstetric fistulas resulting from trauma or operative manipulation during child bearing. studies show a high prevalence of fistulas among communities who practice FGM and marry off their girls at young ages.
What i have seen personally is a case of recto-vaginal fistula i.e. faeces being passed thru the vagina, when i asked the patient about her sexual life, she said "Mzee tu anakuja na kufanya kazi yake...siwezi mkataza".!!! I have seem quite a number of Pokots with these conditions. We should tell our sisters out there with such conditions that there is treatment. (although mzee will have to 'kula bench' for kitu 6 months to facilitate healing!)

on a personal note, i dated this amharic Ethiopian chick Tigish Amredu five years ago & she told me her own older sister went thru a fistula coz she was too young to give birth at 12 years of age...wtf?...such things shouldn't be going on in our 21st century world, anywhere in our planet for that matter. Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad ..I just wish they would castrate all them guys who impregnate these youngs girls just for the heck of it.........DAMN IT Evil or Very Mad

kensoy... gross - ati pathological communications

omg... u mean this stuff happenz in Kenya, mi i've neva heard. Yes you hear early marriages but i've neva heard of this medical connection to it. That man should kula bench for 3yrs even (na which man is ready to go there when the recto-vagina fistula condition is there? eh! ati "anakuja na kufanya kazi yake"- haki men mm mm mh )... imagine tu the quality of life for that woman, aish hata kama ni bwana wooi wacha tukose tukae peke yetu. Na hawa pokots?... i'm not hating but dang they seem to have a lilttle bit of everything going on in that community hata kuolewa huko is getting scary.
And if this really happens, i wonder why there are no laws connected to such cases. Both for the gals parents and the husband himself this is ridiculous. I'm thinking about that boi over here who is in jail for having consentual blowjob with a fellow 17yr old and the poor bratha is doing time - we really need some serious consequences like this coz this is a bit much for me.

PreciousA,

U sound like u've never been to Kenya, health care is a whole different ball game hapa...i dont think fistulas would pass as dinner time conversations! One can only mourn at the kind of ignorance that prevails. Quite often, victims are sometimes disowned by their husbands and branded as "cursed". As for the men who actually venture there, u can only conclude that they are sick...yeah, real sick, just like ur 17yr old blow-job dispenser!!

On the other hand i dont think Altoo is giving us the full story...come clean bana, just tell us u've seen (or been in...) a fistula!!!!Hakuna ubaya!

Racmos & kensoy, am I missing something here?.....in ref to your feedback comments on my posting, I hereby encourage, urge & strongly suggest you re-read my statement above coz it's beyond me that anyone who can read can misinterprete, misunderstand and/or clearly take a sentence out of context the way you two seem to have clearly done Mad

i agree it obviously doesn't pass for dinner conversation- but given the extent of this condition/ injuries i'm surprised there is no outcry or anything like that. As much as theres the anti-FGM movement, ama anti rape etc... this should not go untold. Ask any kenyan on the street and 9 out of 10 will not know, which is a shame.

Hahaha!Altoo relax, just kidding with you!

Precious A...why dont you start an organisation to 'fight' these fistula problem, seems ur so touched. It doesnt have as much 'clout' as such issues like FGM but are definitely worth addressing. I know of a group of doctors who usually come to Kenya esp. MTRH in Eldoret to perform free surgery. This year i think kitu 20 or something women benefited from the exercise....i guess all of them will enjoy a Merry "Fistive" season!

Cheptabkoret,

The connection between sexual assault and fistula formation is quite straight forward and especially in this case, in a 7yr old. At 7 yrs definitely the girls sexual organs are not matured...immature epithelial surface, muscles and gland (so no lubrication)...Sexual assault is a violent act, the girls body is not able to withstand all that physical trauma (from the penetration).
Therefore she ends up with a perforated vagina or even uterus. These structures are in close approximation with the rectum and the bladder which are also torn in the process, therefore depending on the site of perforation, she can either have a recto-vaginal, utethro-vaginal or a vesico-vaginal fistula.
Such injuries require massive surgical reconstruction and are not without permanent sequelae eg. infertility and not to mention the permanent psychological effects.
Terrible thing this, thank God the cases of defilement have reduced...it had fikad a time they were the norm of the day.

Very Happy unajua wee ni jinga Laughing u have me laughing where i shouldn't be. And yes i am very touched infact depressed, atleast someone is doing something (the doctors you mentioned). With your description of the 7yr old gal case... this does not have the same "clout" as FGM???? Twisted Evil Its just our culture that this nasty topic= taboo so we sweep it under the rug but not any more. They brought a castration law for rapists.. its probably time for it to be resurrected for fistula related cases. Kwanza this foolz don't really suffer medically unless maybe a case of gono/syphillis or something silly they okota somewhere is the worst they probably get yet this gals are traumatized - its not fair.
but no worries.. as soon as Cheptabkoret gets to parliament (which you and i will see to it) this will be taken care of.

oh come on now people, as much as it might be a good idea to be a people spokesperson, our current political scenario is too violent and corrupt for me, so i will wait for kina kensoy and altoo to vie first and go clean the whole thing/ mess .... and not to mention my privacy. But something should be done to the rapists, especially paedophiles... stricter laws should be enhance... i support castration.
