dunno for sure Cheptabkoret but my guess is clan elders probably just studied the personalities of the clan warriors, compared & contrasted them to the general behavior of wild animals and matched them up accordingly....I am hoping our wazees & older biikabkutit would shed some light on this just for us, the young ones, to know for sure Smile

Ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!! WHAT did you just say mennn? My animal is a hyena and guess what, I really do think its just a symbol or a mascot like most of these UNIV in the US

Some clans call the sun their animal. Now what does the sun have to do with the animals.

LOL folks.....my bad Embarassed of course we are all speculating on this coz no one knows what our animals denote to us for sure Exclamation ...come to think of it, i wish i had asked my bomori b4 he passed on......to be clear though, I personally think that they may have the same significance to us as our horoscopes do Rolling Eyes & while I don't believe we display the same characteristics as "our animals" as implied by Cheptabkoret, I also think they may simply be just mascots like Chemosi says or have no meaning whatsoever as suggested by Rokiha......having said that, I still think hyenas are mean cruel animals right behind the wild dogs.......no insult intended Chemosi Wink

For me I think its true. The child could only respond to one name out of the several floated at the sitting and that was the one they will settle on. And the respond was in the actual sense the charateristics of the particular old man.

Yes the hyenas. They may not be very popular animals becuase of their greediness nature. But in the real sense its believe that the hyenas are very active and they do the killing of their prey themselves only for the lion to come and chase them off and starts to feed on their hunt hence their sneaky habits ( kwa sababu hua wamekasirika) Laughing . For your information..... the lion by the way is a very lazy animal spends most of its time sleeping under tree shades.

Courtesy of my watching national geographic, i must admit that one thing that surprises me with kimagetiet is that of all the preditors in the african savanna, the hyena is the only which can chase its prey for upto 10 miles non-stop as opposed to ambushing it like the leopards, lions 7 cheetahs do..talk about persistence Wink .....those bastards can run the whole damn day if they have to just to catch a targeted prey..u gotta respect that Laughing

The main reason for me to change my avatar is worse than that, it was due to a million complains from my folks who thought my avatar looked aggressive and Twisted Evil I think I will have to assign it to you

Clan animals I guess are a representation of the simple subconcious behaviours of the people within a particular clan. For example a lion as a sign would represent that the people of that clan are natural leaders, or fierce, or feared by others. This is a statement courtesy of my grandma a long time ago, told to me in the chiget, while blowing the fire with a chepkutet. I will never forget. May her soul rest in peace. I miss the tales!

I agree that the animals could be a sign of how members of the clan are...but i also think assigning a name makes the clan name easier to remember...
Lemme ask, are there clans which share animals?Especially among tribes as in a Kipsigis clan sharing an animal with a Nandi clan?
Any expert out there?
